What should we be doing next?

Page Last updated 19-11-2008

1. Engagement with young people to ensure that services are appropriate, approachable and accessible.

2. Address the barriers raised by the ministerial meeting (May 2008), namely the capacity of existing CASH services and work with schools and colleges to improve and standardise SRE across Newcastle.

3. Increase the uptake of long acting reversible contraception through more active and innovative promotion, and increased accessibility through pharmacies and specialist outreach nurses

4. Evaluation of services to assess the impact on rates.

2010 and the target of reducing under-18 conceptions to a rate of 23.8 per 1000 young women aged 15-17yrs.

Although Newcastle has made progress it is unlikely to meet the target of reducing the under-18 conception rate to 23.8 per 1000 females aged 15-17. In particular, under-18 conceptions are higher in the most deprived neighbourhoods.
